Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a predominantly ground based martial art which focuses on the understanding of body mechanics and leverage rather than aggression and strength to successfully defeat an ‘opponent’
To use a modern reference, most of what you see in MMA (the ufc for example) is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Throws, sweeps, chokes and joint locks are utilised to maintain a dominant position over one’s opponent or training partner.
The benefit of BJJ over most other martial
arts is that during training and competition, you will not receive intentional strikes to the head. Meaning you will be able to train harder for longer without taking head damage.
Instead sparring is done (when a student has developed an understanding of what is ‘safe’) to the end of achieving a submission over one’s training partner.
Absolute trust and discipline is given and expected in return from every student to maintain high standards, discipline and everybody’s safety.
